I was having the same issue after trying to play a new audio, "System was displaying the Sandisk logo (with the pointy thing), then the screen goes white and returns with the black logo screen. The computer does not recognize it."
The fix that worked for me:
Held the "on" button for 15 sec until it shut off.
Locked it using the switch at top.
Pushed the rec. button and hooked up the USB cable at the same time.
"Welcome to recovery mode USB cable connected Enter USB2.0 MSD mode".
The player now showed up as a drive on my pc.
Created a new folder in the 16MB partition and re-named it sansa.fmt.
Upon disconnection, the player formatted itself and shut down.
I then checked the firmware version and it was still up to date.

Every time I attempt to use sansa.fmt in my recovery drive, it gets erased as soon as I disconnect my sansa and restart it. I have the "Main image can't be found...blah blah"
it's total BS

I'll let you in on a secret. Look at the diaplay when unplugging the Sansa, and it will give you clues as to its actions. The sansa.fmt folder will be gone when you look in there again, because the Sansa uses this file/folder as a command to format the device. If the folder is gone, the Sansa deleted the file/folder after formatting.
The same applies to the firmware files. If they are loaded, you will not see them in the root directory. Let me know what you see in front of you, since I'm at the other end of a post. I'll need exact descriptions of what you try, and what happens.
Phrases like "it doesn't do anything" will score zero bonus points. Responses like "I connected the e200 in recovery mode. The display said 'Enter Recovery Mode MSD', and I had a '16MB FORMAT' icon in WIndows Explorer," will win you a cookie. I think you get the idea...
