This seems like an answer: http://www.anythingbutipod.com/forum/showthread.php?p=171673
An alternative that I've found also seems to be spraying it with some compressed air. I'm about to try this today.

I can relate. My e270 was replaced through an RMA and the new e270 I received definitely has a physically different scroll wheel than my original. The plastic ring surface has less texture so my thumb easily (and often) slips off, plus the wheel is so tight it's near impossible to move it. It totally sucks. I feel like I took a big step backwards in usability, hate using it and don't even feel like listening to my player anymore. I've contacted support and they said they will be getting back to me, but I wanted to chime in on this thread so there is another data point on this issue.

having the same problem with my scroll wheel, will try this over the weekend hopefully it works.
e280 has been a great player otherwise!

Worked great! Trickiest part was removing the small metal cover for the wiper... it was so tiny, had to get a needle to get under the clips but they popped right out and the cover went flying as warned! Cleaned the contacts with some 91% isopropyl alcohol and a q-tip and it's working great again, can use this little player again!
