You guys are killing me!  Actually, this thread has some detail about ReplayGain.  The FAQ thread was pre-Replay.

In a nutshell, ReplayGain allows the Sansa to adjust the volume (gain) on the player between tracks, so that they have the same volume.

This is useful if you have MP3 files from various sources, with varying volume levels set during the encoding process.  Personally, I prefer using a utility like MP3Gain to normalize the volume levels in the first place.  I am happy with the gain levels achieved with Windows Media Player’s ripping engine versus Rhapsody tracks, as they are just about equal for MP3 and WMA.

So, as I switch from a little Cal Tjader to some Rammstein, my ears are happy.
