Is it possible to use the player whilst plugged in to the mains? I need an MP3 player to play audio in an exhibition and as it’ll be playing all day, battery power isnt an option.

Yep.
It is only when the player is connected to a computer using a regular USB cable including a data connection that you can’t play the player–but even then, you can use your computer’s software to access and play the tunes on the player. (And there also are some work-arounds: you can use a power-only USB cable; and you can only push a regular USB cable into your computer lightly (or cover up the USB cable’s data pins), so that only the power pins in the USB cable connect up.)
