Try updating the firmware When the player is connected to ur PC in MSC Mode.

To connect it in MSC mode:

  1. Turn device OFF.
  2. Slide the Hold switch down to Lock (orange color showing).
  3. Press and hold the center button while connecting the device to the PC.

If this is one of the original Clips (with the round, lit scroll wheel and wimpy clip on the back), the battery lead wire has probably broken off at the connector to the battery. This was (is) a common problem; the soldering at the factory left much to be desired in some cases.

If you want to try and tackle it, and have a small-tipped soldering iron, you can probably fix it yourself. The hardest thing is cracking the case open without damaging it and getting it put back together again. Click here for a disassembly guide with pictures.

If you don’t feel confident in doing this, transfer everything off of it and save it on your comptuter (for later), bid it a fond farewell, recycle it responsibly and get a new player.

And if soldering concerns you, you also can use conductive glue to get the lead back and attached to the battery.  Available in electronics parts stores.
