AC Adapter for Charging Sansa Clip w/o Connecting to Computer

For anyone with a RAZR cell phone or one of several Motorola bluetooth earsets, the charger for those items produces 550mA at 5VDC, and does a great job of charging the Clip.

Question Regarding charging with AC adapter or Motorola razor charger vs using USB cable and PC -

On my PC when it is connected, the battery indicator shows it is charging by flashing bars across the indicator but when connected. When it is connected  to an AC USB charger or my razor car charger the clip battery inidicator just shows a solid inidicator (partially charged) it doesn’t flash bars across the indicator and doesn’t seem to charge.

I have updated the clip to the .18 latest firmware but the non PC chargers don’t seem to be working. Can anyone else confirm how the battery indicator acts when connected to an AC or DC charger?

If there is no animation the device is not charging.  Its likely the charger is not connected or powering the device, or else its fully charged.

I have a motorola razor and it’s charger works great and is about 20.00 i’m putting up a link . Hope this helps someone http://www.store.motorola.com/mot/en/US/adirect/motorola?cmd=catProductDetail

IndySabre:

I concur with sansafix - no animation means it’s not charging.  However, I have tested and observed that battery icon animation occurs when I use either my AC or car RAZR charger.  With your car charger, did you have your ignition key in accessory or on position?  Does the car outlet work for other functions?  If there is no power to the outlet, the Clip won’t charge; but, it will display a non-animated, filled battery icon under certain conditions, even if the ignition switch is off (for example, if you turn the ignition switch on long enough to start the charging process, and then turn the ignition switch off).

Can you use the usb charger that comes with the clip or do you have to buy a zip-linq retractable to use with the zip-linq ac adapter?

Here’s an Accurian complete charging kit for both wall outlets & your car lighter, on sale for 20 bucks.  If it says “iPod charger”, then it should work with Clip, right?

(link removed - this charger wouldn’t work with the Clip - the end that goes to the player was too wide, not the small USB type that goes into the Clip)

I guess I’ll end up ordering the Zip Linq.

i said it did, you wanna run a poll or something?

FWIW, a Blackberry charger will work with the Clip, too.

Okay, another question - will any USB charging cable work with the Ziplinq charging adaptor, that is in Greig’s post? (page 1, post #5)  I see there are phone charging cables available - I just don’t want to buy something that won’t work. Do I use the regular USB cable like I use for transferring files from the computer or is it specifically a charging cable?  (I don’t want to fry my Clip!)

Can I use my Motorola phone charger? Outputs 5V 850ma

yep

Sorry to bring up a slightly older topic but this one had most of the info I wanted to know. However one question I have is this. When using a Motorola phone charger, can I still listen to the music? My company wants to use an MP3 player for it’s on hold music and that would require it to be constantly plugged into a power source so it never dies. Would this be a viable solution?

When plugged in directly to AC power, you can play the Clip as well (just not when plugged in to the computer, absent modifying the USB cable or using a power-only USB cable).

Thanks for the quick reply Miikerman. Exactly what I was hoping to hear.

I bought an A/C wall charger on Ebay that had a reported 5 VDC/ 500ma output but it would not work with my 2GB Sansa Clip.  The charger works good with my Sansa E270 player.  The Clip charges OK using the USB port on my PC.  When using the usb port on the PC the Clip’s charging light blinks.  When I use the A/C wall adapter it does not blink or charge ??

Does anyone know if the charging light should blink when using a wall adapter???

eBay is a convenient acronym for Caveat Emptor.

Either return the charger, or purchase one from a known vendor.

80 cents plus shipping???  That’s crazy!

Both a USB car charger and AC supply (very portable, with fold-down plugs–has good reviews) each for $3 including shipping.  Although the AC supply is low amperage, it seems to be enough for the Clip (needs to be verified).

Now that’s inflation for you! I paid a penny (plus shipping) for mine 5 months ago. Less than $10 in total for the car charger plus the wall charger and both are working great today.
