2 Sansa Clips and Opensuse 11.2 - one works, one doesn't

I have 2 Clips both set to MSC mode.  One is version 01.01.32A and the other is 02.01.32A.  Neither connect if I just plug them into the computer’s USB port.  If I use this trick:

Turn off Clip

Put into HOLD

Press and hold center button

Plug into USB port on PC

The Clip with version 02.01.32A will be recognized.  DMESG shows this:

I tried the same trick with the version 01.01.32A, but it doesn’t work.  I get:

[3884.424035] usb 1-5: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 13
[3899.475096] hub 1-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 5

What does that tell you?
