I am using 5.0.5 iOS 12 and iPhone 7 with no issues so i do not think this is a software or update issue.
Is the iXpand detected under ioS settings > general > about? if it is not seen there then the phone itself is not detecting it so the app would not see it either. If this is the case it could be a bad drive.
