Functionality Questions

I’ve had several Sansa Clip players, but I’ve always run Rockbox on them.  Now that you can’t get any old ones, I had to buy a Sport, and I do not understand some of the missing basic functionality.

What I do is copy a bunch of folders onto the device, in the order I want to listen to them  (eg 01 - Album, 02 - Album, 03 - Album, etc.).  Using neither Folder or Music function, I cannot select the first album, and have it continue on through all of the albums in the order I specify.  Huh???   That seems like VERY basic functionality.  I was able to get around it by creating a playlist, but again, I simply cannot select an album and have it move on to the next one.

Also, on the Folder view, I select Internal, then Music.  I see all of the albums there, but they do not seem to be sorted in any type of logical way.  Certainly not alphabetically like I would expect.  I see no way to change the behavior as well. How does it sort this?

I know the basic firmware is nothing like Rockbox, but my goodness, this seems like really basic stuff…

Regarding your second question:

  • Also, on the Folder view, I select Internal, then Music.  I see all of the albums there, but they do not seem to be sorted in any type of logical way.  Certainly not alphabetically like I would expect.  I see no way to change the behavior as well. How does it sort this?

Take a look at this web page and the suggested software for Win PC:

Regarding your first question:

  • What I do is copy a bunch of folders onto the device, in the order I want to listen to them  (eg 01 - Album, 02 - Album, 03 - Album, etc.).  Using neither Folder or Music function, I cannot select the first album, and have it continue on through all of the albums in the order I specify.

When I know that I will always want to play a collection of albums in a continuous and specific linear order, I adjust the ID3 tags.

I give all the mp3 files the same album name and use 2-digit track numbers to identify my preferred sequence. I also add these 2-digit track numbers as prefixes to the filenames.  All of these types of edits are convenient using the free software mp3tag.

Thank you for your suggestions.  I can “get around” the album play by using a playlist.   I did try the sorting utility you mentioned, and it does work.

I guess I was more complaining than anything.  I do like the unit, but the operations are severely lacking what I consider basic functionality.  Even my older Clip Plus (using the default firmware) would sort and play albums in a row.

Thank you for taking the time to respond.
