Choice of Memory Cards for Leica D-Lux 5

SanDisk does not list the Leica D-Lux 5.  What are my choices across SanDisk's offerings?  I intend to shoot both RAW and JPEG and the occasional movie (although movies are unlikely).  My computer is an iMac 21" Desktop with built-in card slot.

I'm a newbie to digital and intend to focus on 'art photography.'

for RAW shooting and video I would go with Extreme cards. I am not familiar with that camera and the specs I can find online dont mention what type of storage it uses. probably either SD or Compact flash. Both have Extreme Product lines though so you would be good to go either way.

That's really a nice PnS cam you got there with a large aperture good for achieving shallow depth of field. It also records HD video 720p (Not full HD) and shoots raw. It can only do 2.5 fps which is the average on most PnS cams. I would suggest  use either a class 4 or a class 6 card since I cant find info on the net if your cam will work with a class 10 card.

Re: Choice of Memory Cards for Leica D-Lux 5

Thanks Jamieson.  That makes sense.  Being more of a street shooter (as opposed to action pics of kids or sports), the 2.5 fps is fine by me.   Think I'll start off with a 4GB, Class 6.  I don't yet have the camera or the manual, so no idea what Leica recommends.  Moreover, SanDisk's offerings are overwhelming (Extreme, SDHC, UDMA, Ultra, etc.).  With experience, I'm sure these things will become obvious.    I'm still mourning the loss of Kodachrome!!  LOL.

Thanks Dr. Lucky!   Extreme 4GB Class 6 it will be (not sure of difference between Extreme vs Extreme III, but will search the net). Odd that Leica doesn't make clear recommendations and/or SanDisk doesn't include Leica cameras on its device list.

Re: Choice of Memory Cards for Leica D-Lux 5

a little thing to keep in mind.  The Extreme SDHC card line was bumped to class 10. this was a blind roll and the SKU was not changed. If you are ordering online they may have older pictures up and you may receive a class 10 card. Only way to be sure it is a class 4 card will be to go into a store and physically look at it. Or just see if the camera can use class 10 then you dont have to worry.

The Extreme III cards were older and replaced with the new Extreme. I know it seems backwards but it is the case. Extreme III cards will generally be 20MB/s cards but the ones produced toward the end of the life cycle of the product are 30MB/s cards.

Re: Choice of Memory Cards for Leica D-Lux 5

Standard cards are entry level. they will not work for HD video capture. low cost cards.

Ultra II, now re-maned Ultra, are your mid grade cards. these cards are generally class 4 but there are some class 2 from early productions so be careful. Class 4 is supported by most HD capable cameras but some require class 6.

Extreme III, and Extreme HD video are the same for the most part. Extreme HD video replaced Extreme 3 and has been speed bumped from 20 to 30MB/s. Both are capable of HD video. Extreme III is class 6 where as Extreme HD video will be class 6 for older production class 10 for the newer production. to make it more confusing starting very soon they will be changed to UHS-1 a new SD specifaction.

Extreme cards will be class 10 30MB/s cards

And A new Extreme Pro 45MB/s card was just announced which is rated as UHS-1

If I were you I would go with Extreme HD video or Extreme 30MB/s. These cards will work for anything you want to do and give you the best performance. Not only that but they have a life time warranty as well. I know it is confusing but I hope it helps.

Re: Choice of Memory Cards for Leica D-Lux 5

Thanks drlucky.   That was a big help.  In the end, you recommended the Extreme HD video or Extreme 30MB/s.

'Now I promise I won't bother you anymore!!  pinky swear!   but your recommendation above does not show a "III".   However, I think you meant to include the "III" (class 6), so I'm going to the store and I will ask for the  Sandisk Extreme III, 30MB/s (in the GB size I want).

Reason being: Class 10 cards are not  listed on the list targeted to my camera  (and you did say the Extreme (non III) is Class 10 whereas the Extreme III is Class 6)

Re: Choice of Memory Cards for Leica D-Lux 5

Both Extreme and Extreme III have class 6 and class 10 versions. class 6 were older productions and class 10 were later productions. you would need to see the physical card to know which one you would be getting as the SKU is the same.
