Micro SD Adapter needed to unlock write protection on micro SD card?

My 2gb and 8gb micro SD cards are corrupted, and I am unable to access the cards either through my phone or through a USB card reader I recently purchased. I’ve attempted a format through Windows, but it was unable to format. I tried formatting through SDFormatter, but an error says the memory card is write-protected, and to release the write-protection switch.

I understand that a Micro SD card --adapter-- has a mechanical switch on the side for write-protection. However, I only have a USB card reader with no switches. The Micro SD card is plugged directly to the USB stick, and USB goes into the PC.

Now, is the adapter with the write-protection switch required in order to format a micro SD card? As if there is write protection on the cards that can’t be bypassed without the adapter and it’s switch? Or should I still be able to format the micro SD cards with my simple, switch-less USB card reader?

And I realize that this site has seen a lot of threads with similar titles, but nearly all of them point to the mechanical switch on the side of the adapter, and how it sometimes sticks, comes loose, or whatever. I never found a definitive answer to my exact problem.

Thank you.

What about reformatting it to exFAT, does it make a difference?

Why would you suggest formatting to exFAT??? :confounded:

That format is only for 64GB cards and larger.

http://forums.sandisk.com/t5/All-SanDisk-USB-Flash-Drives/64-GB-MEMORY-CARD-NOT-RECOGNIZED-BY-MY-MOBILE-GALAXY-NOTE-II/m-p/323546/highlight/false#M8881

Disfruta.

Dear User

Excuse me, that answer this message, after two months, but I just saw it when I was “surfing” on the Forum.

I liked your smart way to raise the issue, and above all, that you have “concerns”, that take you also to browse by SanDisk.

So I’m sure that you will return, and see this answer, and I guess " will be worth it".

So, I decided, dedicate a post, the Sunday afternoon, to see if I can contribute something on this topic.

The dilemma of the Cybernauta and your secure microSD

I understand that you have a  microSD 2 GB and microSDHC 8 GB with "problems”.

Also, I see that you name, several devices, which cause confusion, adding " more problems " yet.

Such as: phone, card reader, microSD card adapter, and messes with switches (mechanical, informatics or electronic).

Above all, there “confusion of confusion” with the "write protection”

1-   Regarding your two microSD, everything I can think of for now, as  suggestions, I answered, in  two answers that are in the following link:

http://forums.sandisk.com/t5/All-SanDisk-USB-Flash-Drives/64-GB-MEMORY-CARD-NOT-RECOGNIZED-BY-MY-MOBILE-GALAXY-NOTE-II/m-p/323546/highlight/false#M8881

2-  Look, I commented, detail not to use “card reader”, but if “microSD card adapter”, precisely so that the connection is direct and not complicate things adding “problems”, to something as simple, as knowing if the microSD, works or not.

There seems simple, right? (ja, ja, ja)

2.1-  What happens is that the adapter, is a simple “passive” device (it has no electronic components that amplify or modify the signals, such as transistors, etc.). And it has a mechanical switch to read-only, similar to the SD card.

2.2-   Instead, the card reader is an “active” device (which inside has thousands of transistors, which are inside an "Integrated Circuit " or "Chip”).

And this is precisely one of the problems, which does not allow you to see if your card works or not, or does not work well the reader.

   2.3-    Why this happens:

_ First _, very simple: because we are introducing a new device, in the “chain of errors probability”, which is not needed and is dangerous for the card, if it is not of very good quality.

_ Second _, because most: 98 %) are FALSE, and bad copies of: SanDisk, Kingston and Encore (are the three brands I use, other do not know).

_ Third _, how to differentiate the genuine the false: opening it, yes, that’s.

For example, the SanDisk microSD reader, (that small and beautiful, coral red and black, like the “Blade”), is prepared, so that you can open with fingernails, with a press simple (and patience).

Inside, you’ll see two “tiny squares blacks”, who have a lot of gold contacts.

These are the famous “Chips”, the technology of the XXI Century.

Well, as you suspect, in the false when opened, will see that there is no Chip!

Just a drop of epoxy resin, that coats a passive circuit (resistors, capacitors, etc.).

And is cheating at first, until it no longer works and burns your SD card.

Then… you complain about the card, in the Forum (ja, ja, ja).

_ Fourth _, but, further clarification: if we have the original of excellent quality, It is wonderful!, because with the set (microSD + reader), (this is the invention of the Pendrive), we have an “micro Pendrive the variable memory”.

_ Fifth _, in short: as you’ve probably noticed, then in the case of problems with the microSD, to formatting, etc, it best, it is the most direct connection to the computer, which is achieved with a simple adapter and the port of card the Notebook.

3-     Write Protect: I know three cases on this subject, two that we can implement, and one, that does not depend on us.

3.1-  The first case: is the mechanical mode (with switch).

As you can see from the photos, it is a simple switch that is to the left / up (Lock) on the SD card.

And in the same way, is the adapter for microSD, which is like an empty SD card. Also, it appears that there were anciently, UFD with mechanical switch, which is stopped making. I could never get one, only the picture (Wikipedia).

This is the best way to access public PCs without risk of malwares, because once you put the switch in Lock, it becomes read-only, and no virus can infect the SD card. Then, you put the microSD into an adapter (in Lock), and if the PC does not have a port card, you put it in USB reader card (of high quality).

3.2-   The second case: the informatic mode (with software).

Can be done in three ways: “touching” a line Windows Registry, with gpedit.msc, or with small software (free), that does it for you without risk (1.20 WriteProtector USB, etc.).

But beware, this is only, for the PC on which you are working, not for the UFD, by it is nothing more, than an port blocker for your PC.

3.3-   The third case: the electronic mode (due to failure the “Chip” UFD).

This, is that which we can not implement, and nor for now, undo it.

As you, saw in the Forum, there are many complaints about the problem: angers, grunts, groans, wailing, howls, and “magic” proposals…

Yet, for now the solution is very simple: return the UFD and ready.

Enjoy.

When I go to use an unknown PC, before putting the UFD, under the small software of internet (email or virtual disk), and then I lock the USB ports, which remain then as “read only”, for that the virus can not write in it.

And there, see if PC is dangerous, because when there are viruses, misleading popus, asking me to remove the “write protection”, begin to appear.

In all, the best protection is the mechanical, because there are virus packages, that block the register, for unlocking the port.
