How to format 8GB SDHC card to work with Compactflash based camera?

I bought an 8GB SDHC card (Extreme III), planning to use it with my Canon 5D camera with an adapter (SD to Compactflash). My problem is the camera gives the message "Card not formatted". If I try to format with the camera, I get the message "Can not format" Any ideas how I can overcome this issue? Can I reformat this card any other way? Regular SD cards work fine.

Thank you.

What adapter are you using that allows SD to be used in a CF slot?  I would guess it is not SDHC compatible if it is not working.  You might want to contact the manufacturer of the CF adpater to verify this.

The adapter is made by Panasonic. (model # BN-CSDABP3)

There is no mention of SD High Capacity, only SD, and that product has been out since at least 2002, so I am going to say quite confidently that the adapter is not compatible with SDHC cards, so the maximum capacity you can use is 2GB.
