Rockbox and Sansa firmware take about the same time to initialize a database. Rockbox is a little smarter about updating it. The big improvement is that rockbox can update in the background, so you can browse files or use the old database while it makes the new one.

That said, a 300gb music library like mine takes literally all day (some 20 hours or so) to initialize a database. I also use playlists and I’m very careful with the folder structure, so the database really doesn’t matter all that much to me.
