My WD 250MB flash drive worked fine in XP up to a few days ago and it stopped today. The icon for the new device shows up but everything freezes. The drive works well in my Win7 system and the funny thing is that small flash drives work also well in my XP, only the large WD drive makes it freeze. I have the same antivirus in both computers and this does not appear to be the problem. Any suggestions as to what may be happening?
Hello,
Have you tried updating the USB drive for the XP computer?
Also you can test the unit with the WD DLG Tool.
How to test a drive for problems using Data Lifeguard Diagnostics for Windows
The drive works well in win7 and also in XP safe mode. The problem is that when i plug it after regular boot mode as the computer freezes when I open the Windows explorer or when I try to remove the disk. Also in control panel system configuration is not accessible. I downloaded the drivers for windows XOP and installed them.
Also, please note that I had a mirror image of my disk from a few days ago on another hard drive and when I boot from that the WD flash drive wroks fine. The only change I have made since then is to upgarde to ESET security 7 from 4. But when I disable ESET the drive still does not open and computer freezes and I have to reset it manually because it will not accept a soft reset.
This is puzzling:
-
Drive is fine
-
Works fine in safe mode
-
Works in another computer
-
Does not open and freezes computer when inserted in normal boot mode
-
Drivers were updated
-
Drive opens when booting from a backup disk
The only thing I can think off is that Microsoft made some change in the last update to XP before support is terminated next month or ESET IS7 interferes with the drive even when it is disabled because everything else is the same as before.
I am having the same problem with my external hard drive too!! I just uninstalled all the software from my computer and put the drive away! But i would like to use it again i have tons of infor on it! Please keep us updated when there is a solution!!
I woudl greatly appreciate if WD can determien what is happening with its WD passoport drives and XP.
As I said my WD passort disks are not recognized suddenly by XP and freeze my computer.
But
- The drives work well when my computer is boot up from a backup disk.
2. They work well on win 7
So, it is not:
a. The power of the BUS
b. the drive
It is probably due to some conflict with latest XP updates.
This is terrible. I have 2 WD passport drives I cannto connent to my computer.
