Windows not recognizing external hard drive

Hello everyone,

I’m new to the board, so I apologize in advance if this issue has been addressed via a previous discussion:

I have a WD My Book, 1TB in size.  A few days ago, it stopped appearing on Windows’s “My Computer” as before. I tried on both Windows 7 as well as XP, trying a USB cable, and then tried a SATA cable. It currently initializes when I press the button, but then just remains on. No ability to interface with it via Windows.

Below are 3 options  I’m considering to try in hopes to rescue my data:

1)  Test with a new power supply in the event the failure is due to a current faulty power supply.

2)  Test with a firewire connection (doubtful it will work considering SATA and USB cable connections did nothing)

3)  Take the disk out of the case, buy a new enclosure, place disk in enclosure, and hope data becomes available.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. I thank everyone in advance for their time.

Regards,

Arun

Hi there, did you try to check if the drive was seen on the lower levels of the computer? Try disk management and device manager (Right-click computer/my compuer> manage) and see if the drive is there and how is it there on the 2 locations.

Trying the power supply is the first thing to do as long as it’s one with the exact same specs, and taking the drive out should allow you to just connect the drive internally to a regular desktop computer as a secondary drive and the data should be there right away --if-- the drive itself is good.

How do you remove the drive from the case? I have the same problem; I have a 2TB My Book that was working fine until the other day when I restarted my computer. Now all of a sudden the light comes on inside of the drive and you can hear it trying to turn or turning, I do not know which. But my computer no longer recognizes it? I tried to remove the drive from the case but I cannot figure out how to do that? Will that void the warranty? I never even knew this thing had a power button on the back of it, I have only had this drive for about three weeks or so, it is a brand new replacement drive for another drive that got trashed by you guys’ Firmware Update!
