I have installed the wd charm. When i click on the charm it opens and says my book needs an update, i click on update and it tells me i need to update the firmwaer. When i try to update the firmware i get told it is up to date.
Hi, When Smartware shows the update message, it refers to a My Book firmware or a Smartware firmware. You can download the firmware from the download section for your My Book model and the latest Smartware version from the link below.
Find your My Book model and click on it to view the download link to the latest firmware.

I have read the instruction for updating the firmware, and there is this instruction "
- An available USB port on your computer is required. Your drive MUST be connected to your computer through the USB port to update the firmware." Unfortunately my My Book Live does not have a USB connection so I am unable to proceed with the update.
by charm do you mean the WD app?
For your case the USB cable requirement doesn’t apply. You can update the firmware using the Ethernet connection. For more information you can follow the steps from the following link.
