Win 10 - Unrecognized error after transferring files out of WD portable drive

Hi, I have recently bought a laptop and it comes with win 10. Plugging my WD My Passport into any of the 3.0 usb port, it works fine - files can be opened and new files can be transferred into the drive. However, if I were to transfer files out of the drive, the drive will cut off its connection with the usb port and win 10 will show an error of it being unrecognized.

I also tried plugging it to a win 7 desktop, everything works fine, perfect.

I have tried setting some of the recommended settings for power mgmt through a google search but to no avail.

Is there a solution? Thank you.

I’d recommend re-installing USB 3.0 drivers in your Windows 10 system. Communication is being interrupted at a system-level with your unit. Alternatively, you can force legacy USB 2.0 mode by replacing the USB 3.0 cable with a Micro USB 2.0 cable (Which fits into the flat half of the USB 3.0 port).

Hi Trancer,

How do I go about reinstalling the usb drivers of my system?

I only did it specifically for the external hard drive in device manager since it became unrecognized after stopping abruptly.

Make sure you have all your latest Windows updates and all your latest laptop device driver updates. You may have to do it a couple of time to get them all, but there may be an issue with the Window’s 10 USB driver that has now been fixed, but not yet updated.

I tried another My Passport from my friend and it worked fine. So does the problem lies with my drive?
