This happens occasionally on my 8gb clip. I have no idea what is causing it. The “skips” are very brief. Sometimes, they’re more of a light pop. I don’t think they are there in the original CDs because I never noticed them playing on my computer. It seems to be close to the beginning and end of songs that it happens.

This happens on my 8GB clip with compression level 8 FLAC files. Converting the files to FLAC compression level to 0 eliminated the pops. Not sure what the ideal setting is. Hope a fix is coming.

Are you certain that this will eliminate them? I have tried ripping to levels 1, 2, 6 and now 8. Needless to say, I’ve spent a lot of time ripping in the past few days and I’m tired of doing it only to be frustrated.

And I agree. I do hope a fix is coming. It’s great to have a sweet little player that will play flac but what’s the point if it has all kinds of noise in it that shouldn’t be there? I’ll try the 0 compression level on a couple of albums, I suppose. I just hate to because flac files at that compression level are huge.

I became convinced that the compression levels above 0 were the problem, enough so to batch convert my entire FLAC collection to level 0. I did my best to rule out other problems such as drive corruption, file corruption, bad rips, etc. At level 0 seeking causes no problems like it did at higher compression levels.

As I went down the compression levels from 8 to 7 to 6 … 0 I could reproduce the problem less and less. At level 5 I had no skips unless I did a seek during playback, then the player would skip about a minute after the seek. As noted before, I have no problems at level 0. Before you convert your own collection, please perform your own tests on the same song with different compression levels, and try seeking during playback

Given this, at about 30 MB per song for me, going from level 8 to level 0 compression only cost me a several MB increase in file size. I know it stinks, and it adds up, and we can hope it does get fixed assuming it’s a player problem and fixable, but I’m still just thrilled to have FLAC support on my clip.

If anyone else can confirm this or has had a different experience, please report in. For the record I’m using firmware 2.01.32a and FLAC 1.2.1.

If anyone cares I used a commercial program to do the conversions, but foobar2000 should be just as capable a tool.

@jv2009 -

Thanks for the response. Yeah. I converted a few albums to flac level 0 and observed no problems.  In the end, I chose to go with 320 MP3 until they (hopefully) get the issues with flac straightened out.

I can have skipping or pops with FLAC if I fast forward in a file but not if it plays from beginning to end.

Mine does the same thing but, if I turn the volume down below 50% it works fine.  Go figure.  I had adifferent model before this Clip and it started doing the same thing so I figured that I was going out.  Now it’s doing it on a 2 week old unit.

What format is your music in?  (MP3, etc.)

Also, what is the bit rate and audio sample rate of a song that’s skipping?  You can find this out in Windows by right-clicking on a song and select “Properties”, then the “Summary” tab, then the “Advanced” button.

Did you notice that you’re responding to a 5 month old thread?

Most likely CB's suggestion of pushing the headphone plug further into the jack worked, since there was no further response. The person just before you dredged this thread up from the basement.

Sorry.  I get email notifications of new posts to threads to which I’ve subscribed, so my brain says “new” without thinking to check the dates of previous posts in the thread.

Where’s the “hanging my head in shame” smiley?

Hi,

Did you every find out what the issue was? I’ve just bought a SANSA CLIB 8GB and I’m having some issues with flac & ogg vorbis files.
