Why are files indicated as having been deleted from my crashed computer?

My WD drive (and software) was routinely backing up my laptop which crashed.  When I connected the new computer, the WD drive created a volume for the new computer leaving a volume for the crashed computer files.  When I attempted to retrived individual files from the original volume, I noticed that they all had lines through them as though they had been deliberately deleted.  Obviously, only a relatively few had actually been deleted on purpose.  If someone could explain this, I would appreciate understanding what the WD drive is trying to tell me.  Fortunately, the few crossed out files I’ve tried to retrieve have been usable.  thanks.

The software gives you the ability to retrieve files that appear to be deleted on the original volume that was backed up.

This will allow you to identify those files and avoid restoring files that you still have on the computer and will become duplicates.
