When copying larger files My Passport ejects itself

I’m running on a mid 2012 Macbook Retina w/ OS 10.8.3. I was copying some movie files over to my My Passport and it’ll transfer fine up until 215mbs then it freezes, and after about 30 seconds I’ll get a message saying the disk was not ejected properly.

Is this an issue with the drive itself? Or maybe the cable? Or maybe even some application on my OS?

I never had this issue before with my late 08 Macbook running Snow Leopard. I’m really just wondering if this is a fixable issue or if I should start trying to find a new HDD.

Hello, first try running a test using Disk Utility. If the test completes successfully, the Passport might not be receiving enough energy to work correctly, be sure to use the USB cable that came bundled with the Passport, avoid using USB extension cables or USB hubs.
