What USB port should I use when connecting my External HDD?

Hi!

I just need to confirm what the salesman where I bought my “My Passport SE 1 TB”. He told me to never use the USB ports found at the front of the CPU and use the ports at the back instead…he said that it’s the best way to avoid damages from the wires or the cable…

I’m just not very convinced by him, because the ports at the back portion of the CPU are not really very accessible…I find it hard to use it for the connection because I most of the time bring my external drive with me at work and I only plug it in the computer when I do Back Ups…

It is recommended to use the UISB ports on the back of PC. On older ones they maybe USB 1.0 on front. I think the ports on the back also recieve power first and many PCs have wimpy power supplies. The USB powered drives are very sensitive to voltage so don’t use a hub either.

What about an extension?

or maybe a longer cable?

WD doesn’t recommend cables longer than the one provided especially on USB powered drives.

Thanks Joe!
