The short version: Rockbox is to mp3 players as Linux is to PC’s.
so whats the point of it?
what does it do?
It’s an alternative and open-source firmware (the “OS” of the player). It looks and works very differently than the stock Sansa firmware.

It only works on selected (outdated) hardware, you have to put some time in it to get it running, for the advantages you get you have to pay a price by loosing other features or by higher battery drain, you get told it “runs” when there is barely a proof of concept, the community … needs getting used to… well, quite so.
