WD wireless pro with Android OTG

Is there a way to use the WD wireless pro drive with an Android phone using OTG adapter.
I have a Nexus 6p phone running Android 8. When i plug in the drive, it powers on, however the OS reports that the device is not compatible or probably needs to be formatted!
I’m able to attached a flash drive using the OTG adapter and that works fine.

I would think that as the WD pro has a battery built in, it should not need to be powered on via power being supplied from the phone?

Hi alirz1,

Well, WD My Passport Wireless pro cannot be used by connecting it directly to the phone. However, you can connect your android phone with the device using the My Cloud mobile app.

I wonder what would be the reason why the wireless pro cannot be connected via OTG to the phone. All other standard external hdds work fine in that manner!!

You will need the right cable with male connectors on both ends to connect and also the right Android phone/file browser app that can read the file system on the storage. Then the Android phone should be able to mount the drive as a standard external OTG USB storage but this is very device dependant. Keep in mind this is not a supported use case by WD for MPWP.

I have the right cable and the right file browser etc… well its simply a matter of supporting a properly usb hosted device. Regardless if its Android, widnows or mac. Other standard external drives have no issues with this functionality…

Perhaps WD should add this as a use case!

Have you tried a different file system on your MPWP?
I just googled a bit and noticed the Nexus 6p doesn’t seem to support ExFAT (default file system on MPWP)

This drive uses DAS drivers, not DefaultDataStorage drivers. So android can’t connect to this drive.

@CarryGun That would make more sense. Though i’m not familiar with DAS

looks like SCSI drivers, not USB
you can see it in device manager
