WD SN580 PCIe

WD SN580 is showing PCIe Gen 3 in WD dashboard but it is a PCIe Gen 4 SSD

your machine may only support PCIe 3.0

need details to assess your situation

Motherboard - Gigabyte B550M DS3H AC.
it is a PCIe Gen 4 motherboard.

Thanks, it seems that Gigabyte has not updated the BIOS to the latest AGESA module

If your motherboard supports PCIe Gen 4, there could be a few potential reasons for this:

Driver or Firmware Issue: Ensure that you have the latest drives and firmware updates installed both on the SSD and motherboard.

BIOS Settings: Check your BIOS settings to ensure that the PCIe slot where the SSD is installed is configured to run at Gen 4. Maybe the default setting doesn’t have the full capabilities of the hardware.

Diagnostic Tool: Sometimes, diagnostic tools may not accurately report the speed at which the SSD is operating. It’s worth double-checking with other diagnostic tools or contacting WD support for clarification.

If after checking these points the issue persists, you may need to further investigate by contacting WD support or referring to the motherboard’s manual for specific troubleshooting steps related to PCIe Gen 4 compatibility and operation.

Generally SSD should be backwards and forwards compatibility as per PCIe standards. I use WD and I have installed them in laptops galore. I have one SN580 2TB in my collection installed in a Dell XPS 15 fine.

My Dell is PCIe 3.0 and the SN580 SSD works fine as expected

I’ve updated my bios 3 or 4 times since i got this drive and it’s still stuck on pcie 3.0 x4 instead of 4.0 x4 like it should be. And i’ve got the software+driver installed and it hasn’t even had an update since i got it. Like Creative and most others that aren’t AMD/Nvidia/recent-ish mother boards.

I have my SDS580 in a PCIe 3.0 based laptop machine and it works as expected and it has no been problematic.

I am speculating if AMD has some issues with some controller chips used with some vendors as I see a lot of comments on other forums.

according to specs here , its pcie 4.0 for graphics and m.2 is 3.0, not 4.0,
