WD Smartware - does it change files dates?

I am running Smartware to backup to a Passport and it appears to be working fine. But I noticed that there are 3 file dates - created, accessed, and modified. I also noticed that several files have a date_accessed earlier than the date created and the date modified is some times earlier and sometimes later of both of those dates. If date_accessed worked as I expected, where if I read a spreadsheet but do not make any changes, I would expect it would update the date_accessed but usually it does not. Does Smartware use these dates to know which files to backup (I would assume it does) but does it also change any of those dates?
