WD Smartware crashed, took out my computer

My laptop died so I bought a new computer 3 days ago.  I had bought a MBL a few days before to try and lift data off the laptop but between the problematic harddrive on the laptop and the slow network speed I opted to get a pc tech in an he ripped the data off the dead laptop onto the new computer - 60GB of it.

So, with a brand new desktop computer, a brand new MBL I thought I would do the right thing and setup to backup the 60GB to the MBL.

Started the backup from Smartware and left it over night.

Seemed to be still running in morning so I went to work.

Came home from work and found Smartware had died.

Whats more, the nasty thing took out Explorer so I found I could not shutdown from the menu, could not restart.  If I tried any other programs from the start menu they just openned a sweet little exception window.

Network was cactus, etc.  so I had to do that cringeworthy thing and use the power button.

Of course, when the computer came up again windoze had to do a disk check for 40 odd minutes.

I got the computer and the MBL up again to find a meagre 10GB had backed up before the crash.

Not bad for a brand new set up.

Has anyone else had this happen?

Seems like alot of traffic on the MBL group about nasty goings on.

Running a quad core i5 with 6GB memory, terabyte main drive, windoze 7 home edition sp1.

Cheers,

Ray

Don’t bother answering.  I can’t trust the software since it crashed straight out of box so I have uninstalled it and will not recommend WD to people. I am not that fussed either with user groups as help as they generally aren’t.  Why I would have to tolerate software that crashes out of the box and get no response either here or via a problem report is beyond me.

Well that sounds bad dude

there are many reasons why the software might not work

please check firewall, antivirus or other software that can conflict with the application

make sure you are running the most recent version of Smartware
