I updated the WD Firmware on my myBook Essential and installed the Smartware 1.2.2.5 update as per instructions. A small “Smartware” icon appears up in the menu bar, but when I tell it to “Open Smartware”, smartware starts and fails. This is the error that appears in the log:
6/26/10 11:08:38 AM WD SmartWare[679] *** Assertion failure in -[NSTextFieldCell _objectValue:forString:errorDescription:], /SourceCache/AppKit/AppKit-1038.32/AppKit.subproj/NSCell.m:1531

Hopefully someone at WD can use this information to fix this bug.
I use MAC OS X 10.6.4 on a MacBook Pro w/Intel CPU and 4GB memory.
I am having the same problem. It will not update 1.1.1.4 on Mac OS 10.5.8. I also find that every time I want to backup it asks me to install software. What do I do?
I have been having the same issue as well. I have a Macbook Pro with 4 gigs of Ram running off of Mac OS 10.6.4 I have tried to update my drive to the latest Smartware software 3 times and it doesn’t seem to take everytime. Even though I follow the software update instructions. I am not sure what the issues.
I am having the exact same problem. My Passport Studio came with old drivers and firmware where WD Smartware would appear to install, but when i tried to open the software, nothing would happen. The e-ink on My passport only showed VIDEOS 09 only. I found the update on the WDC.com website and installed that as per the instructions. Install went smoothly. But when i click on WD icon in top bar on MAC OSX and select OPEN WD smartware, nothing happens. But after firmware i now have more info showing on e-ink screen. Seems very flaky to me. Is WD working on a fix for this? The software isn’t usable.
Finally got it working thanks to WD support.
got to system preferences >share, and then add a computer name to see if that solves the problem.
Same problem on my new WD 2TB disk (bought today), no update. I’ve noticed that if I copy the application (coming from the WD partition) in my Applications folder, this is deleted by the update process.
I don’t know what adding a computer name is related with this, but I’ll give it a try.
Well, nothing to do. It doesn’t work at all.
