First, let me say that I’m not a general hater. I use lots of WD products. In my main rig I use Velociraptor and RE4, in many currently running servers I use RE2 and Black, and I buy a ton of external drives every year and generally recommend Essential drives.
In fact, I just minutes ago bought four 500GB Passport Essential drives as Exchange backup drives.
So why am I writing this? I had to spend time researching to make sure SmartWare wasn’t preinstalled. In fact, I’m still not sure it isn’t, but that’s generally OK, I know how to disable it. The thing is, when a customer HAS to jump through hoops to get and use a product, something is seriously wrong. When a product ships with unwanted software, something is wrong. When 100% of users (users knowing what SmartWare is, not sheeple) is somewhere between “meh it’s OK I guess” (minority) and “OH MY GOOD THIS REALLY **bleep**” (vocal majority, I’m in this camp), you have a serious, serious problem with your product, and if management isn’t listening there’s a problem with the company.
WD, we’re watching you. Are you listening to us?
