WD Passport with USB 3.0 20 pin header

Just upgraded my machine with a ASUS Sabertooth Z77 Motherboard.  It has a 20 pin USB header, my case is older and has 1 USB 3.0 port on the front but was designed to be plugged into the rear of the case (into a USB 3 port)  I purchased a USB 3.0 to 20 pin header adapter.

When I plug my WD passport in with the usb 3 cable (wdbacx0010bbk) it powers on but windows does not detect it.  I can feel the drive spinning in the case.  If I swap the usb 3 cable for a usb 2 cable, the computer reads the drive just fine.

Also if I plug the USB 3 cable into the rear of the case the drive is read just fine.

Any ideas?

The adapter does not seem to be providing a good connection via 3.0

it’s recommended to connect to the rear ports since those provide sufficient power
