I have a WD 400 Passport and recently was trying to clean it up a bit and delete files that were no longer of value or doubled up files. During this time, the drive was having problems by continously being ‘ejected’ on its own and coming back … Messages of “disk not ejected properly” and yada yada …
So while this was happening, on my desktop appeared multiple ‘folders’ that were the same name as my passport drive, along with the ‘drive’ icon itself for whenever the drive was ‘mounted’.
I would delete those ‘folders’ and then all of a sudden, my whole drive was gone …
So after freaking out and realizing my entire drive was wiped clean, i sucked it up and decided alright, might as well reformat it and what not and just learn from this little mistake … Now the drive shows up in disk utility as 400.09 WD400BEV External Media, however it won’t format/partition.
Now I remember upon first purchasing the drive, there was a certain ‘file’ of sorts that came with the drive that i assumed enabled the formating process when connected to a computer. I figure if i can get this file/driver that I can reformat the drive. I have WD Smartware but it doesn’t do anything to help recognize the drive or format it…
The drive has never been dropped and other than the constant so-called ‘improper ejecting’ it worked fine. Now I’m pretty certain I can’t recover what was deleted, but I just want to be able to format it again and pretend none of this ever happened so me and WD Passport can run off into the sunset.
