WD MyBook Essential error message "No writable WD Smartware partition found"

Windows 7 laptop.   Tried to restore a backup from the 1TB MyBook to the laptop using WD Acronis and it formatted the laptop hard drive!!!  Had to reinstall Windows 7 from the Dell DVDs.  Now it won’t recognize the MyBook so we can’t even retrieve our data!!   Error message:  “No writable WD Smartware partition found”.  What happened?  Did the external hard drive fail?  Or was it an Acronis software problem???  Help!!

There are several problems here.

First, the only known program from WD that gives the “No writable partition” error is Smartware, which is not related to Acronis at all. You used the wrong software to recover a backup from another program not related to it.

Second, ignoring Smartware, do you see the Mybook on Disk Management and are you sure it doesn’t have a password?

I was in a hurry when I posted this problem.  Forgot to mention that after the restore process finished and the error on the laptop screen was “MBR press any key to boot from floppy”!!!  No floppy drives any more and what happened to the MBR??

The Smartware software was disable as we were only using WD version of Acronis.  Have never used a password on the external drive.  After reinstalling Windows 7, etc. and plugging the external drive in… Windows doesn’t find it… didn’t show up in My Computer or anywhere.   Now we are wondering if the external hard drive failed or was it a software corruption??
