WD MyBook Duo DAS - automating backup to another portabe drive plus Dropbox

Ive just purchased and received today the My Book Duo (not the Live - sorry this is the only category I could find to create this topic in)

Fortunately I’ve just stumbled upon a link regarding the encryption in this drive which means that if the unit goes down, despite the drives being in perfect working order I’ll lose all my data in one hit as these could not be transferred to another unit. I suspect like many others I would have much preferred WD to give me the option to turn this off but that’s not really the discussion I wish to raise here.

It does leave me in a risky position though. I had already planned to link up to Dropbox as an offsite back up but I am now wondering if I could also hook up another, single basic external HD to create another onsite backup? The idea of having to download several terabytes of info from Dropbox unless I absolutely had too does not appeal to me. I need to point out at this point that I don’t intend to keep much data on my iMac itself.

I know it’s slight overkill and it would be far cheaper for me to just return the My Book Duo and get a couple of external drives and combine those and Dropbox as my backup system, however I really feel that all that manual backing up could lead to confusion and missed backups eventually.

So my main question is as follows: Can I link the My Book Duo directly to my IMac, and in one hit, backup to the RAID 1 setup, plus an additional external HD connected to the back on the My Book Duo, plus Dropbox? In a nutshell, backup once and know that I am covered for everything from theft, fire, disk drive failure and unit failure.

Thanks for any advice you can give

Hello,

WD does not have an application that can do that for you.

You might be able to do it with a third party backup software.
