I depend on the data I must store on my external hard drive to make a living. I was on the job in a public venue when I realized the drive was not being recognized by my computer. I looked like an incompetent ■■■■■. I am always adding new data so keeping a duplicate drive is not always possible and in the case of a crash a lot of expensive data is lost. I have had this problem in the past with your drives and it cost me several hundred dollars to recover my data. I’m not made of money. Your product is inferior and you charge good money for it. The guy that recovered my stuff last time warned me to get away from WD but the investments had already been made. You have software on each drive that apparently causes these things to crash. Is this an effort to further rip off the consumer? The data stored on these devices is incredibly valuable to the people that use them and yet I see no recall, no fix and no effort to spare the consumer. This is now the second time this is happening and I am pissed beyond words. I will NEVER buy another WD product, furthermore I work with the public on a large scale and will be sure to let everyone know what I think of your product. Look at all these people with the same problem, don’t you think it is time to do something ethical with your product? You must be aware of what I am talking about, why do you allow it to continue? Thanks for nothing!
Your not alone in this I have had the same problem my life’s work and history was on mine WD do not recover anything on our behalf. All now lost.
I have retuned mine back under warranty now waiting for a reply from WD.
I have been contacted by technical support. Hopefully this can be remedied, the response has been appreciated. I will happily report to this post the outcome of these efforts.
WD has contacted me and are working with me to fix the problem. I applaud them for the customer service I received today and hope that we can get my data recovered.Thank you!!!
I must say that I am grateful to Western Digital for the support I received in fixing the problem I reported on this blog. The customer service provided to me far exceeded any expectations and my faith in Western Digital is not only restored but I would support anyone’s decision to purchase Western Digital products. I hope that you realize the sincere gratitude I have for all of your efforts and the speed with which your responded. Once again, THANK YOU so much for your help!
THe same thing happened to me. I went to the knowledge base area and found the problem listed there. The 1st solution was to plug the drive into the wall outlet, not the surge suppressor strip. BINGO! The drive is working.
This this is the 2nd component I’ve had to plug into the wall from the power strip I now will happily go out and buy a new power strip. I don’t really care why the strip has become not reliable. It is old.
Happy with on-line support.
hi, I am also having the same problem of WD External hard drive not recognized and tried to troubleshoot it for the past 3 days and still not successfull. Could you please advise what did the WD support advise you to do. I tried pluging straight to the wall socket as what you did and works but not for me. Appreciate you response.Thank you
Im also facing the same problem with my wd passport. I can hear the fan running and when I go into my computer properties itsunder their but not recongized? Thanks!!
My brand newish 1TB hardrive is also not being recognised on my computer or any other computers. Yet it is wurring. It was beeping. But appears to have stopped. It was named and it has renamed itself back to the original wd code. I am about to have it installed into my tower pc. Any suggestions before I do that.
Mnay thanks
Jon
What was the solution???
Hi I’m not techy, and not used to using forums, so forgive me if this is the wrong channel.
I bought the harddrive to use for back-up, and checked that it was working. Before I started using it for serious, my TV HD recorder failed, so I copied files from the WD to my computer HD then plugged it into my TV to use short term for recording. When I got a new TV HD recorder, I unistalled the WD from the TV (not just unplugged). Now when I connect to the PC I can’t see the drive on “Computer”. I can see it in disc management, but can’t do anything to it - all the options are greyed out.
I’m guessing that some Manufacturers software has been deleted from the first partition.
Any suggestions how I can get it working?
I suggest contacting support thru this forum or by telephone and see if they can help you. It took data recovery to get some of my data back but support was very helpful. I know how frustrating this is but I have found in the end that Western Digital stood behind their product. The first time it happened to me I didn’t have the same support but I am thankful I contacted them.
If you don’t mind me asking, what did you end up doing to fix this issue?
I have a Scorpio Blue drive that is giving me the same trouble. wd10jmvw-11s5xs0
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
I have the same issue with a 1TB Passport in as much as the drive is picked up by my laptop and I can use the USB Safe Eject tool to remove it but it soesn’t show in Explorer.
Are WD keeping this solution a secret? I would have thought the obvious place to post a link to it would be in this thread.
Yeah I’m having the exact same issue as you Gralo.
If you find any possible solutions…please let me know. Will do the same if I find any solutions that actually work.
Not sure if I should have started a new thread or not…
OK, problem: external hard drive is filled with blue ray, hi-def films. External hard drive will play back films with WD Media Player, but it is invisible to my pc. I can do nothing with it except play back movies already on the ex hard drive. When I try to see the contents using my pc all I get is a message saying that - to be used - I must first reformat the ex hard drive.
I cannot reconcile the fact that the WD Media Player sees the content and will play back selected films with the fact that the pc does not see anything. Can anyone enlighten me? And, of course, can anyone suggest a remedy?
Thank you all in advance.
