I’m trying to install WD Backup to use with My Passport Ultra in Windows 10. The program did not install correctly - it doesn’t appear in the programs list nor when I look in Program Files or Program Files x86. So I’ve tried to uninstall it, with an eye toward trying a re-install, but that doesn’t work either. I went through the MS “Fix problems that block programs from being installed or removed” steps and it supposedly fixed a problem, but it still won’t uninstall.
BTW, I had WD Smartware installed previously, but that doesn’t open either. A logo briefly appears and then nothing.
Thanks, but I think I need to uninstall it first. (It won’t let me run the install since it thinks it was installed.) I opened the installer as an administrator, but it still wouldn’t uninstall.
Thanks, but I’d already gone through those steps. They didn’t help and the File Checker found no problems. Still can’t use the program or uninstall it.
Eureka. Sort of. I installed and ran System Mechanic (per one of the KBs here), which did find some errors. It It required a reboot, which I think happened unexpectedly due a Windows 10 involuntary reboot. After that, uninstall and reinstall worked. So that result might have due to (A) System Mechanic (most likely), (B) Windows 10 update or (C) just a reboot.
However, WD Backup does not recognize the MyPassport external drive. I tried rescan a few times, and unplugged and replugged the drive. (File Explorer DOES recognize the drive.) But none of that helped, so I guess I now have to start another thread here.
My experience is that WD Backup is NOT for older Passports, even if the documents say it is. I suggest you re-download SmartWare and see if that works.
Thanks Cliff. WIth WD support’s help I got Smartware reinstalled and working with my Passport Plus. He advised me it was better to use Smartware than WD Backup. If I understood him correctly, there have been issues with the latter in WIndows 10.
The upshot is that, while Smartware is now installed, it sounds like, based on what I’ve been reading, Windows Backup or another third party software is a better choice than WD’s. There are some pretty damning reviews of WD’s software online.
I was just goin to suggest using the Windows Backup. I just got WD Passport Ultra. I still have Windows 7. Same issues…downloaded WD Discovery…utilities and security installed BUT it won’t install WD Backup. I went to the WD sites and “installed” it through that link. BUT can’t “see it.” Finally found it…tried running first backup BUT it found NO TARGET. So it can’t even find the Ultra Passport. SO frustrating…I started a support email but haven’t gotten a response. Seriously…I’m thinking, maybe, I should have gotten a Seagate. How can their own software not be updated to work with THEIR own products???
