W-XP to W-7 Transfer

Newbie here and apologize if this issue has been previously addressed.  Could not find by Search.  March, 2008, I purchased a WD Passport Portable External HD [250GB, Model #:WDXMS2500TN].  I have used it to back up a few folders but have never learned how to use to full potential.  My current laptop [Dell Inspiron E1505, W-XP] is 5+ year old and still working.  I am in the process of purchasing a replacement [Dell Inspiron 15R, W-7].  Will my WD Passport be suitable for migration from my W-XP [34 bit] to W-7 [64 bit]?  Perhaps there is a better/simpler method to accomplish this migration process?

Any suggestions/ideas greatly appreciated,

   RL

I don’t know for sure if an old drive will work with Windows 7 since Windows 7 wasn’t around then. If it doesn’t you can either network the computers for transfer or Windows has a method to connect with cables and transfer files.

Thanks for your prompt response.  This is much above my limited experience level.  I will do some further reading/research and most likely contract some local help.
