The problem is most likely not the player, but your headphones. Once you’re sure that you set up your Zip for “North America” and not “Europe”(Europe is volume capped), if it still seems quiet it is those headphones. Despite what their on-paper specs would suggest, in reality the HD201 need quite a bit of power to sound decent, and to go very loud. Mine were essentially useless with Sansa players unless I added an external headphone amp into the mix.
The Sennheiser HD201 is 108 db/V 24 ohms, which is equal to just 91.8 db/mw. That is extremely inefficient. No wonder it doesn’t play loud enough with the Clip Zip. Sennheiser states sensitivity in db/V rather than the db/mw figure most other headphone makers use. Choose a more efficient headphone.
I knew this, I’ve been through that. Funny, I think I just discovered an odd similarity in this little swap.
Speaking if swaps , for those who run into the low volume issue with your Sansa, here’s a handy tip to save you grief and frustration. The Clip Zip is provided with a basic set of headphones. While they’re not fancy, they are quite handy to compare against your favorite headphones when checking out the device, if the volume or sound quality isn’t up to par.
If the volume is similar, the likely culprit is the volume restriction imposed when selecting Europe as your region in settings. When this region is selected, the player will not have the high volume option; this is a legal requirenment mandated in the EU. Select Rest of World or Americas as your region to enable the high volume option.
There are plenty of headphones that will vary considerably in their overall sensitivity. The IEM type or “in ear monitor” types are like little ear plugs; they have the advantage of blocking ambient noise a bit, allowing decent sound at a lower overall volume.
