Today I took MyBook (WDBAAF0010HBK) to work. It was working fine but when I got there, and plugged in my USB it felt loose and clearly wasn’t making a connection. I don’t think it got jostled or anything but I’m positive that’s what’s wrong. Is there a way to remove the case to see if it’s still making a connection to the hard drive?
My husband just brought his home from work so we could compare them and it is the usb that goes into the mybook. His is flush with the little silver thing that goes around it, mine is sunk in so the part that goes into it wiggles around and isn’t connecting. How/can this be fixed?
ok, in reading the warrenty info, I know better than to try to remove the case. It is still under limited warrenty, does that cover this kind of fix?
Hi
I wouldn’t recommend to open the drive since you can lose the warranty if you do that, but you can call WD to replace the drive
Call customer service and see about a RMA they will probably replace it. It sounds like the port is coming loose from the board it’s soldered to. They will not pay for data recovery.

Please excuse my ignorance, but are you saying if I send this back, they won’t just fix the usb, they’ll just send me a new one?
They will send you a recertified drive not a new drive. Basically a returned drive that has been repaired and checked out.

Thanks for your help, Joe. For 80 bucks and all the pics of my baby since birth, I think i’ll just pop the thing open and get my own files. I know there’s nothing wrong with it. Just **bleep** it’s only 3 months old.
If this is a drive with the Smartware it will be encrypred whether you used a password or not. If you give up on the warranty part another fix may to go to an elecronics repair place and see if they can resolder or replace the port.
