I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop and the 250 Passport Essential portable I bought at Costco in 2008. When I went to do an update/backup, the laptop goes into hibernation after a set time when no action is being done by myself. I thought the external hard drive doing the backup would have been enough to keep the laptop operating. When I come back at a later time, the external hard drive’s led is not on and my laptop is hibernating. Does the WD passport essential turn off when the laptop goes into hibernation? Is there a way to overcome this? And when the passport is finished updating isn’t there a message indicating this? Excuse me as I am a newby at this. Thanks for any input.
No, there won’t be a message indicating that the backup is done. That’s because SmartWare runs continuously. On the laptop, are you using your power adapter? If so, you should be able to go into power settings and turn them to never, and that should do it. I would leave monitor to shut after a while. That shouldn’t hurt anything.
