Unreadable External Hardrive

I have all my photos on an an WD “My Passort Studio” external drive. ( I have a Macbook Pro, using I-photo). I tried to access the photos today and got this warning: “Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable”

I tried following the instructions that followed but I still can’t access anything on this ext. drive. Is there anything that I can do??
