'Unallocated' partition

I’m running W7 64Bit Home Premium. A couple of months ago I used Acronis True Image to back up my OS on to a 3TB My Book Essential and used the same My Book drive for continuous back-up.

True-Image made three partitions on the drive: H,I,J. H: is (I assume) the System back-up of 99.9MB; I: is the back-up partition of 465GB and J: is 1.54TB and has the Factory Image and 1.10TB of free space! and Acronis also made an unallocated partition of 746GB.

I didn’t notice this until my back-up stopped working because it’s partition is full.

I have two questions…is this the way Acronis True Image usually works? and how can I get that ‘unallocated’ space back?

I’ve tried EaseUs, but it doesn’t even see the space.

Any assistance will be gratefully received,

Thanks

Hi,
Thanks for the interest. I couldn’t resolve the problem…nothing would even recognize that there was an ‘unallocated’ partition. So I did the only thing I could think of which was to back up my important data and use the WD application to return the drive to factory default condition. It did the trick as far as getting back the ‘missing’ space…but another question has arisen.
I am using that ‘re-formatted’ 3TB drive to back up another 3TB drive…a Hitachi…but both have identical capacity. The Hitachi has 1.40TB of free space…but after backing it up…starting from completely empty, the WD drive shows only 653GB of free space?..I’m wondering why the ‘New Volume’ as it is now called, is showing the full 2.72TB capacity, yet it only has 653GB free space remaining. Is there some setting that I need to do to get it to have the same free space as the drive that it’s backing up?
Thanks
