Transfering data from one computer to another

My current computer is Windows XP, and I just bought a new computer that is Windows 7.  I want to use My Book to transfer my data from my old computer to the new.  I need help figuring out how to do that.  If I run the back up program using Windows XP then connect My Book to Windows 7, will it restore correctly on the new OS?  I was thinking there was a way to just copy the data files without using the back up program, installing the relevant programs onto the new computer and then just copying the data files from the external drive to the new hard drive.  Would that work?  Or is there a better way?  I initially was going to just backup my whole system and restore it on the new computer, but that was before I realized that they were different operating systems.  Also there are programs on the old computer that I dont want on my new computer.

Once I get the data transfered to my new computer, I would then want to use My Book to back up my new computer.  .  I bought one that is big enough to back up my whole system if I need to.

Any advise is greatly appreciated.  I think my old computer is on its last legs so I should do something soon.  I am fairly computer literate but not that technically inclined so I would need to keep things fairly simple.

Thanks,

KW

Windows 7 has a file transfer utility I think it’s Easy Transfer you might was to check that out. I only used it on a minor transfer on a program that wouldn’t install on Windows 7. Basicaly I think it would copy say my documents etc and transfer to the same.
