Transfer to newer machine?

I’ve backed up all files in my 10 year old HP, running XP. I have a newer, faster machine also running XP. Is it possible to retrieve all files and move them to the newer machine?  I’d appreciate any  help. Thanks.

It shouldn’t be a problem. Just make sure the drive works on the other PC before you clean or dispose of the older PC.

Are you asking if you can remove them from the old system drive to the new system drive?  If so, then yes.  However, it depends on what kind of drive you are using: EIDE (PATA) vs. SATA.  If they are both SATA, then you can remove the internal system drive and plug it into your new computer in another SATA port.  It should load as a secondary drive, then you can copy the data over by copy and paste.

However, I don’t trust installing two system drives on the same machine, even though I’ve done it before.  So, I would get an external drive, copy and paste all the data to the external (now you have a legitimate backup), and then copy and paste the data to the new machine.  Also, if you are new to this, don’t just copy and past the entire drive.  That’s worthless.  Just your files and folders that are documents, pictures, movies, etc.
