I’ve been using a 2 TB (WDBAAF0020HBK-NECS) MyBook Essentials on a Windows 7 computer for backup for about two years. I recently bought a 3 TB (WDBACW0030HBK-NECS) MyBook Essentials, which I was hoping I could use as a network drive via the USB port in a Netgear WNDR3700 router. The router doesn’t recognize the 3TB drive, probably because it’s USB 3.0 AND USB 2.0. But whatever the reason, the router will recognize the 2 TB drive. I can format the 2TB drive and use it for data with the router, and then perform a backup from my computer to the 3 TB drive and continue to use it to back up that computer.
But wouldn’t it be easier, if possible, to just move the backup files from the 2 TB drive to the 3 TB drive? Is this possible?
What software are you using to backup your data? If is Smartware and the 3 TB drive is bundled with Smartware, you can transfer the data and keep using the 3 TB as Backup.
The interesting thing is that WD’s position is that the drives can’t be used at all unless connected to a computer. But the router with the USB port is recognizing my 2TB drive, so we’ll see. I think I’ll copy those files over rather than move them just in case.
WDC’s tech support says that they understand that people are using USB drives as network drives through a router’s USB port, but they can’t give technical support on the process. they said I can go ahead and try, which I will do soon.
They even gave me a link to a tutorial on copyning files under Windows, but then again, I’ve been doing that kind of thing since the '80s.
I have approximatively the same problem(transfer between two WD external drivers via netbook).
I have a mypassport essential (where my datas are located) and i want to transfer my datas from this device toward my"mybook live NAS(it’s the name in french)"by means of netbook HP pavilion dm1;this netbook recognize the both WD.
when i installed software of the NAS,i went on the program to transfer:there was three columns: one of the hp hard drive content and the two others columns of the two WD external drivers contents.On the top of this page the program,I have four “onglets”(it’salso the name in french(sorry))to do transfer of datas between the three devices.my"my book live" is connected to my network modem and "mypassport essential"is connected to my net book HP toward uSB 2.0 and uSB 3.0.
The problem is that the transfer works only between the HP hard drive towards the mypassport WD and conversely.
My question is:how to do transfer of datas between the two WD from this progam(i repeat:installed from the WD "NAS"software CD that i bought yesterday(the “NAS”)?thanks a lot if you can help me to resolve this problem.
