Too little space to install Discovery - please help

I recently purchased a 1TB external hard drive (My Passport) and when I plug it into my PC, the program refuses to install due to my having not enough storage on my PC. My PC is considerably low-grade technology and has very little space to begin with (an issue which I planned on solving with this device) but it will not let me use it as I need. The PC only has 27.8 GB which is notoriously small…I uninstalled and deleted programs I no longer use to free up space but it still won’t let me download the program. I’m very frustrated that I spent 60$ and already I’m running into this problem. If anyone can give me some troubleshooting advice on how to figure this out it’d be much appreciated.
