Three questions about WD My Book: Direct upload, virus, and direct delete (thanks)

Hi, I recently purchased a WD My Book.My last purchase was quite a few years ago so this is all new to me. Appreciate your help with these three questions.

1 and 2: The first two are related to each other. Because with my last drive I backed up files and deleted them directly, I wonder if I can do the same here, without scheduling backups and all that.

For example, I did one backup and I found where my files are stored (which is down a surprisingly complicated path, folder within a folder within a folder, kind of thing). But once there, can I just cut/paste from my hard drive to WD, and similarly just click delete on files there?

  1. Couple times my antivirus reacted to WD doing stuff. The sources all came from my folder in appdata (windows 10), for instance this is virustotal one one of them:

Is this cause for concern?

Thank you so much for your helping a newbie

Hi,

If you want to just Drag and Drop you don’t need the backup files. Just erase the drive and use Windows. When you use Windows there is a choice for Copy or Move. For me, Copy is the only choice, so files are in two places for security. Windows will select either Copy or Move, but you can force either one.

If you are going to keep your present backups, make sure you are using the Volume{ …} folder, mot the History folder.

I don’t know about antivirus. Never had that problem.

Thank you Clifford. So when you say that I should use Windows, what do you mean exactly? Like after I erase the drive, how can tell WD that I will use Windows instead of the backup thing that it does? When I first set up My Book, it asked me to install a few things so I have already have WD security, WD backup, and WD utilities, and WD discovery installed.

Hi,

Just treat the external drive the same as any other drive. You open your C: drive to your folder in a Window and find the WD drive in the Navigation pane on the left. You can open that to any folder and drag files or just drag folders from the C: drive. It will say "Copy to {folder or file name}. Not sure how to use Move for this.

Thanks Clifford, just one last question. Do I need to uninstall anything other than the WD backup or should I uninstall everything before I proceed with this?

If you erase the drive everything should be ok. You may have to delete any Backup Plan, although that may happen when you erase. YOU cannot delete WD Backup, because it is not really a program. DO remove WD Discovery.
