- whats in the changes, is it needed? ( firmware updates i understand should be only if problems are encountered mostly)
- What fail protections does the drive have for if the update goes bad? does it have a backup/known good firmware storage?
Hi @mementh
Have you opened a Support Case? If not opened, for more information, please contact the WD Technical Support team for the best assistance and troubleshooting:
Usually firmware updates are rare. Generally M.2 NVMe products are pretty basic so there should be few problems.
Usually for their drives, if the update fails, you will need to RMA the drive under warranty.
Western digital is notorious for not providing much detail about their updates, with the exception of a select few that they are pressured into releasing. For example, the PCIe payload size bug when using chipset lanes, many of their SSDs have the issue, but they only really fixed it for the SN850 and once the negative press dies down, they immediately gave up on releasing the fix for their other models.
To minimize risk, if you are not experiencing the payload size issue or other obvious issues, then you can likely skip it.
I use the drivers out of the box with Windows as this way issues are usually non existent. My SN580 was problematic until new firmware was installed and now it is stable. Look for the WD SSD tools.
