SMC sees empty SDHC card as being almost full

I installed a new 4G Sansa SDHC card in my kid’s 2G Fuze. When I open My Computer and look at the card, it’s completely empty. When I look at it from within the Fuze itself, the card is empty. But when I open SMC and click on the card, it says there is only about 100M available.

Any clues anyone?

Thx!

Sorry, I spaced this part:  I’m running Vista Home Premium.  Don’t know if that makes any difference.  And I just updated the Fuze’s firmware to latest release this morning, but that made no difference.  Looks like my SMC is at Ver. 1.0 B004.236CDG.

You should have 2 images in the upper left corner of the SMC. One is a picture of the player and the other a picture of the SDHC card. Are you clicking on the card? You can switch back and forth telling SMC where you want to convert the videos or photos to. As you click on each, the memory information will be displayed for that device, both total & free.

Eyup.  The memory size reported on the Fuze is correct, but when I click on the card it comes back with the bogus numbers.

Hate to have to Ask but where did you get the Card? If you go it from Ebay or Amazon from a less than credible user, you may have gotten a bogus card.

I picked up the card at Circuit City.  I don’t think the card is bad, as Windoze sees it correctly as being empty.  Also, the Fuze sees it as empty.

Had to ask. Have you tried one of the work arounds that eliminate SMC all together?

I’m not sure what other “work arounds” you are talking about there.  I have yet to successfully put a video on it, but I have discovered that AnyVideoConverter is not working for me (another story).

But here’s what I have found.  It doesn’t matter whether in MSC or MTP mode, these numbers remain the same.

MyComputer sees the Fuze as having 1.9GB total, with 1.1GB free.  It sees the card as having 3.7GB total, with 3.2GB free.

Windoze Media Player sees only one device, having 3.7GB total and 104MB free.

SMC sees the Fuze as having 1.9GB total, with 1.1GB free.  It sees the card as having 3.9GB total, with 105MB free.

The Fuze sees itself as having 1.9GB total, with 1.1GB free.  It sees the card as having 3.8GB total, with 3.3GB free.

So apparently both WMP and SMC fail to recognize the card correctly.  The Fuze itself, and my Vista machine are both correct.

Check the rest of this board, Ways have been suggested on here that dont require WMP or SMC.

Will do.

It’s really annoying though, having to resort to shenanigans like that.  I would think that a Sansa player, with a Sandisk card, using their SMC, would just plug and play. That’s what I get for thinking.

At least for the fuze i dont know about other players Sandisk is suppoesdly working on eliminating SMC bacause it casues so many problems.
