Slideshow of Digital Photos on WD My Passport

Good day all, we would like to use an external monitor and a WD My Book to make a “Photo Frame” to view all of our digital photos as a slideshow.
We purchased a new Samsung monitor that has both RGB and HDMI inputs. When we connect the My Book to the monitor it does not show as connected.
Is it possible to do this using the My Book and monitor and not have to go through a computer? Has anyone tried this before and would we need specific software to run the slideshow?
