Silver (yes, silver) 8gb Clip: $59.99 at J&R Music (U.S.) -- NOT (seemingly an incorrect vendor listing)

tnmats,

When you checked your local walmart to see what the price was of the 8 GB Clip, did you just look at the price on the tag or did you ask a saleperson to take one out of the case and scan it for the price? Because that’s what I did and it came up as $69.88 for the 8 GB. ;)

My local Wal-Mart today only had 1gb black, and 2gb pink:dizzy_face:

I did what you suggested and sure enough it was $69.88 when the clerk scanned it but the glass case tag still read $79.98.

The price on the tag doesn’t matter. Only the price that rings up at the register matters. The price is $69.88.

For those who may be having trouble finding the 8 GB Clip, I noticed that it’s not in the glass case above on display with all the other mp3 players, at my local Walmart. There isn’t even a tag anywhere that says anything about an 8 GB Clip. You have to look around in the case for it. It’s way down the bottom of the case at my local walmart store.

If I remember correctly it didn’t even say it was the 8 GB on the tag either, I had to look at the plastic case the Clip comes in to see it said 8 GB on it. But I’m not positive on this, it could have said 8 GB on the tag, I 'm not 100% sure about this, it been a long week.

It’s almost like they’re trying to hide it down the bottom of the glass case though. It’s somewhat out of sight unless you kneel down to see it. No other mention of it on the website or anywhere else in the store.

What’s astonishing about this story is that I’ve had the EXACT SAME experience way off in the middle of nowhereland, at the very same MP3 portable electronic area.  I say, “Hey, look at that…there’s a cool new MP3 player down there” and then a 19-year-old clerk walks over, looks surprised, and yells “Hey VERN!  How much are these here MP3 PUHLAYERS?!??!!” with a puzzled-yet-blank look on his face.

It’s so much of a coincidence, they must actually be trained to do that.

ALERT:  Apparently, the J&R listing in fact was “incorrect,” as the item now shows as a 4gb, not 8gb, player.  Time to contact J&R, if you had made a purchase …  I hope that J&R contacted purchasers and did not simply send out 4gb Clips.

:frowning:

A $60 price for an 8GB Clip (in silver, no less) just seemed too good to be true, especially since J&R isn’t known for being huge price-slashers.

I’m still surprised that there’s a demand for the silver Clips … although I’ve read that some people are satisfied with the displays on the silver units, the high reflectivity of the silver seems to be an issue in some situations, so why buy a potential problem? I mean, you can buy the black unit and not have to deal with the reflectivity issue at all.  Is it really that much of a style thing?

You know, it took a moment to sink in…but think about it.  $60 is awesome…but $69.88 isn’t that much more!

OK…I’m playing it up a bit (don’t forget sales tax).  Sorry for the flash, and generally crappy picture.  But there it is at my local Walmart, correct price tag and all.  It didn’t quite sink in until I saw it with my own eyes…an 8GB for about $70 bucks.

If $60 is too good to be true, $70-something is only a little stretch, right?

PS  That’s not a ghost…it’s me, somewhere in the reflection.

My local Wal-Mart last night, had 1 gb black Clips, or 2 gb PINK *shudders* and that was it. I didn’t go in there expressly looking for one, but I had to investigate while I was there…I mean, if there had been a 4GB under $40 I would have jumped on it, but the plan was X-mas shop for others, so at least I wasn’t diverted from that. Still, I’m kinda disappointed

Marvin_Martian:

A lot of times on message boards, it seems as though people talk right past each other, miss the point and then the thread goes off-topic real fast.  My main points were:

  1. J & R is not Walmart.  A $70 price for an 8GB Clip at Walmart doesn’t surprise me, but a $60 price from J & R made me a little suspicious.  You omitted the last part of my sentence: “A $60 price for an 8GB Clip (in silver, no less) just seemed too good to be true, especially since J&R isn’t known for being huge price-slashers.”

2) The fact that J & R was apparently offering a silver 8GB Clip was also surprising.  The Clip in your photo appears to be black.

3) J & R’s online listings last week included 1GB and 2GB Clips and an 8GB Clip (in silver), but no 4GB Clip (which only comes in silver).

Put 'em all together and there was some reason to question the J & R offer, which has now been corrected on their website.

The other point I was trying to make was the "style versus function" issue with the silver Clips.  Like I said earlier, even though some people have written that they're satisfied with the displays on the silver units, the high reflectivity of the silver seems to be an issue in some situations, so why buy a potential problem? By most accounts, the displays on the black units are just plain better - so buying the black unit means not having to deal with the reflectivity issue at all. So is it really that much of a style thing?

Yankee_Clipper, if there is some heat to direct here, I think you might want to point it toward me and not the Martian.  I was the one taking your words out of context (MM was just quoting me), though I certaintly didn’t intend to make fun of them.  Indeed I have the exact same impression of JandR–I like them, but don’t shop there often–so I had a kind of wait-and-see attitude about the alleged sale.

BTW, I think your logic and attention to detail is impeccable.  You are either a lawyer, a forensics specialist, or a philosophy professor.    Or maybe you just watch a lot of CSI.

I will part ways with you, however, on the silver-vs-black question (despite the fact that I JUST returned a silver Clip to BB for a black one!).  As a happy owner of the silver, I am still puzzled and frankly flabbergasted that there are so many complaints about dim displays.  I mean, I posted pictures of mine, set at 0 BRIGHTNESS (whatever that means in high-energy physics terms) and I suspect EVERYONE can read it.  Not a real test of anything, but it gets the point across.  So my fragile little feelings are hurt that everyone keeps poo-pooing the silver unit, dammit.  :smileyvery-happy:  My reaction is probably a mix of what psychologists call “sunk cost” and “cognitive dissonance”.

The screen on my silver model is fine indoors, plenty bright. However, it is simply not readable in sunlight outdoors – which is where I use the Clip almost exclusively. Picked up an 8GB black unit at Wal-Mart which, while not great in sunlight, is definitely readable and usable in those conditions.

OK, thanks.  I needed someone to “validate” my feelings.

sansamatt is correct…I didn’t edit you, I just quoted him:smiley:

Sorry for the misdirected reply, Marvin_Martian.  And no heat intended, SansaMatt.  Thank you for the compliment about noticing the J & R slipup.  Actually, I’m not a CSI fan … my skepticism comes from years of trying to read between the lines of misleading electronics advertising (and occasionally getting burned)!

And sorry for hitting a sore spot with the silver vs. black issue.  I was just looking at it from a cave-man-simple perspective: Silver = Possible Problem, Black = No Problem.  I’ve had a 2GB Clip for a long time, and I’ve been holding out for a LONG time for a larger (and non-silver) Clip.  I guess the bottom line is, if the buyer is happy with it, then it’s a good product.  I now have the 8GB Clip (black) on order, so my long wait will FINALLY be over, soon … I’m looking forward to it !
