Short battery life

Tapeworm, don’t take this the wrong way but I don’t think _ your _ results are typical you when you say you get 11+ hours on your Clip+ battery between charging.  Are you employed by SanDisk and being paid to shill for them?

Maybe I’m just lucky?

And no, I’m not employed by Sandisk. I work for a living. :stuck_out_tongue:

i just got off a 12 hour flight where i listened to my clip plus the entire time. after 12 hours in the air the clip+ still had some battery left. i use MP3 mostly all 320kbps

Well, here was one user’s solution to the battery life issue…http://www.anythingbutipod.com/forum/showthread.php?t=55164&page=2

Thanks for the reference, but that would take away one of the Clip’s most important features.

ogg_ardent,  are you having any major issues with Rockbox at this time?

Has JK98 seen this? :stuck_out_tongue:

Good question!

not really major, but I do have playback problems with my oggs (sort of jumps) from time to time. Also the clip+ won’t charge on my charger but crashes instead with stack underrun. I have to boot the sansa firmware before plugging the charger in.

Other than that rockbox is totally stable and I’m genuinely amazed how good it is and what you can get out of this little player with it.

edit: it sucks, the forum makes unwanted smilies and linefeeds …

I decided to run my own battery tests after hearing the complaints about battery life.  Here was my test - http://forums.sandisk.com/sansa/board/message?board.id=clipplus&message.id=5079#M5079

I get excellent battery life out of Clip+  There are many factors which can affect battery life, but I would think 10 hours or more from a plus can be expected.

I have brightness at its lowest, backlight set to 5 secs, and generally put on an album and leave it - and I get around 6-7 hours. I only use 256 mp3’s, at moderate volumes. My Clip+ is four weeks old. I’m not particularly happy with the battery life, and the battery indicator is absurd. Once it’s down below 50% it has only about 1.5 hours remaining. Yesterday I listened to one album in the morning, about 50mins worth, and the player went from 53% to 48% battery. I listened to an album on the way home, about 70mins, and then one 8min track this morning and it was dead. I will get used to it, but it is frustrating. I am using the latest firmware btw.

I don’t think your player is functioning properly, as to battery duration; I’d exchange it at the seller for a new one (or contact SanDisk for a replacement, under the warranty).

Same here.  I got mine as refurb (so no warranty) & battery at 50% means there’s about one hour left. 6-7 hours is about all it’s got in it.  Sounds like they made a big lot of these with this particular problem.  They’re not unusable, but have to keep the charger handy! (Standard MO on refurbs is reformat & apply latest firmware, so those have already been attempted.)

I haven’t measured the exact time so far, but with inserted 32 GB card it looks like the battery only lasts 3-4 hours now; without the card it may have been 5-7 hours.

Light is/was set to 15 s, EQ is always on, I use «shuffle all» all the time, and files are MP3s with ~230 kbps on average. I often adjust the volume and do some skipping now and then.

Light is set to 5 s now, and I try to avoid unnecessary commands. The last time I checked the battery indicator still showed ~66% after ~4 hours. So I guess it would effectively run more than 5 hours with one charge. That I can live with.

I have the same issue. I get 4-5 hours to a charge, at most. I’m playing audible.com type 4 audio files. I have brightness at lowest setting and I almost never fiddle with the buttons.

It sucks, but I can live with it. I bought a small portable charger (basically a rechargeable battery with a USB port - $10 at radioshack) that I use for backup power on longer trips.

That’s not normal (the battery charge life, that is …).  If you’re still within the warranty period, I’d contact SanDisk for an exchange.

I haven’t measured it, but I’m guessing I get about 8 hours on a charge, maybe a little more. Found two things that improve battery life:

1)  Rockbox.  The clip+ release is still in beta; it’s buggy but quite usable, and the battery lasts a LONG time.  I’m back to OF until the RB stable release is out – then it’s Hello Rockbox!

2)  Custom EQ burns a lot more juice than Normal EQ.  I don’t know about any of the presets – imho they’re all terrible, so I don’t use 'em.  I set my EQ back to normal, and I’m getting better battery life.

Yes, I’m disappointed with the battery – Sansa advertises “up to 15 hours.”  However – 8 hours will do, and the player is terrific.

I’m wondering about Replay Gain – it uses processing power, right?  Has anyone noticed if the battery lasts longer if Replay Gain is off?  I’ll turn it off (doesn’t work worth a hoot anyway), and if it makes a difference, I’ll post back.

Numbster!!

Missed you, old boy.  I agree, the Clip+ has a wimpy battery, at least mine does.  I can depend upon about 8 hours on my end as well, but I don’t use the Clip+ for marathon listening sessions like the e200.

I use the Jazz EQ setting, wma, 160kbps for music, or 64 for podcasts and books.

That explains your eight hour battery life…your use of wma. You’d probably get 14-15 hours in Rockbox with wma.

Numbster’s a grumpy old b*stard, who doesn’t post often because it would mostly be b*tching and moaning.

Yeah, my e280 seemed to last forever between charges – betcha it was about 20 hours.  Only reason I got the clip+ was to stick a 16 gb card in.  Gave the 280 to a friend, and he loves it.  My only complaint about the 280:  that stupid BRIGHT blue wheel, I swear it gave off as much light as a 25w bulb.  I miss the nice big screen, though.  I almost bought the Fuze just for the bigger screen, but I love my wee little clip.
